A Mother's Grief

In a letter written home by a soldier, in August 1914 Private J H Collins to his wife and published in the Manly daily detailing life in the trenches at Gallipoli he also told of the death and injuries suffered by two others of his companions, and the one who was fatally injured was my ancestor and the son of another ancestor and it was through this medium that she learned of his death, upon attending the offices of the military to confirm this to be fact, no information could be forthcoming and It was not for some time before she received confirmation of his death, his service number was 777 and was a lance sergeant in rank and was listed as missing between the 6th and the 12th of August 1915 and he is buried at lone pine cemetery
