Abbott compares Shorten to Nazi propagandist

UPROAR erupted in the House of Representatives on Thursday after Prime Minister Tony Abbott compared Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

Mr Abbott prompted outcry from the Opposition benches after accusing Mr Shorten of being the "Dr Goebbels of economic policy" during Question Time.

But he immediately withdrew the comment after Speaker Bronwyn Bishop intervened.

Ms Bishop removed Labor's shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus from the chamber after he jumped to his feet to protect Mr Abbott's comments.

While accusations flew about the use of comparisons to Nazis in parliament, a search of Hansard shows many references to Goebbels, or similar phrases, in recent years by members of both sides of politics.
