Anthony Minichiello still has pace in his Lexus
DURING his years on the football field, Anthony Minichiello always displayed impressive speed.
At the recent launch of the Lexus RC F at Bathurst, he showed he's lost nothing in that department even after hanging up the boots at the end of last year.
What was your first car?
It was a red Ford Laser TX3…'89 model from memory. My dad was a motor mechanic and he dropped a little turbo engine in there for me; it was pretty cool at the time. My cousin had it after I did, and they sold it off a couple of years later as it was pretty old by then.
What are you driving now?
I have got the Lexus NX, it's a beautiful car, a lovely family car. It's a great, smooth, beautiful hybrid so it's great on fuel. It looks pretty slick too. I have had so many people come up to me and say "what's it like?" and "it looks great". So many comments.
But I'm keen to step into the RC F, have a drive, and possibly get into one of those.
What cars did your family have while you were growing up?
My dad had one of the Ford Falcon GTs, it was a V8, and it was the one with the square lights - the ones with the round lights were pretty common. Back in the day, he was a big car lover, he loved Formula 1 and he had plenty of Fords. I think he also had a GTHO Phase III but he sold it off.
Then we had a Toyota LandCruiser for a long time.
He taught me how to drive when I was 10 up and down the driveway. We had 10 acres and we had an old Datsun 1200 wagon paddock basher so that's where I learnt how to drive.
What is your greatest frustration on the road?
There's a few … other people, pottering along.
My pet hate is when you let someone in and they don't wave. I always wave if someone lets me in.
Do you have any preferred driving music?
I just flick and listen to anything and everything.
If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be?
Carl Stefanovic, he would keep me entertained; he's a funny man. I'm sure we could have some good fun. I know him quite well and he's hilarious.
What is your dream car?
Now seeing the Lexus LFA and seeing what that is capable of and speaking to Allan Jones about it, that is on the bucket-list.
