AFL: Sydney Swans star Adam Goodes has been given more time away from the club and won't play against Adelaide at the SCG on Saturday.

The dual Brownlow medallist and 2014 Australian of the Year (pictured) has been booed at away games all season whenever he goes near the ball, and Swans CEO Andrew Ireland said it had taken its toll.

"Adam is sick and tired of this behaviour. It has been happening for too long," Ireland said.

COMMENT: Government lists acceptable ways to complain about racism

"We will give Adam all the time he needs.

"We will keep supporting him and he will return to the club whenever he is ready."

Present and past players, coaches, officials and commentators have thrown their support behind Goodes, with Geelong coach Chris Scott saying anyone who booed the Swans veteran would "confirm to the whole world that you are a bigot".

Sydney's next away game is against the Cats in Geelong next weekend.
