A YOUNG woman watched on in horror as a large shark killed her father off the coast of Maria Island in Tasmania.
The pair were diving for scallops from the side of a small dinghy when the man was attacked on Saturday morning.
The woman, in her 20s, said she saw the attack and immediately swam to the surface to set off a flare and call authorities.
Other boaters rushed to the scene and tried to rescue the 46-year-old man by pulling him to the surface using the air hose attached to him, but he was already fatally injured. Fishermen reported seeing a 15-foot great white shark in the area just days before.
Police and recreational boaters were patrolling the area on Saturday in an effort to find the shark.
The attack was Tasmania's first for 2015 and the second fatal shark attack in Australia this year.
New South Wales has had by far the largest number of unprovoked attacks in 2015, with its tally reaching 15 so far - one of which was fatal.
