NISSAN'S hero GT-R supercar in 2017 guise will go on sale in Australia this September, with more power and talk of improved handling. At the same time, details have arrived about the even more bonkers GT-R NISMO version.
Nissan says the new GT-R has revisions representing the most significant changes made to the model since its 2007 introduction, suggesting your Godzillas will be more powerful yet comfier and more user-friendly.
Design wise we've got a restyled and more rigid bonnet (which apparently improves front aero performance above 200kmh if you fancy a trip on the NT's Stuart Highway); new front bumper, daytime running lights, new RAYS wheels, subtle rear diffuser and air vent changes, plus an enlarged matte chrome finish V-motion grille to increase airflow to the engine. Which is important considering the extra boost you'll be getting.
The GT-R's 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 has gained 15kW to realise a mighty 419kW - more than a Porsche 911 Turbo or Audi R8 - thanks to increased boost pressure and revised ignition timing. No performance figures have been offered, but Nissan says the new car has "improved acceleration in the mid-range," but really, the current car already cracks 100kmh in 2.7-seconds, so let's not get greedy.
There's the expected super-smart oily bits magic, new titanium exhaust, and updated (and smoother) six-speed dual clutch auto transmission. Nissan offers a refined suspension system and more rigid body to improve handling, balance and stability - never really weak points in the GT-R.
Nissan says the cabin is much quieter at highway speeds without losing the aural excitement when you floor the throttle thanks to a noise cancellation system and improved sound absorption material, while the driver can vary the sound control through different mode settings - Normal, Comfort and R - and by pressing an exhaust sound control switch for quieter starts and low rpm running. The neighbours will thank you.
There's also a jump in cabin luxury with Nappa leather, new "horizontal flow" dashboard, 8-inch touchscreen and switches reduced from 27 to just 11, while, blessedly, the paddle shifters are now mounted directly to the newly designed steering wheel instead of on the steering column.
We don't know the full Aussie specs or price (current GT-Rs start at $172,000) before the 2017 model's September arrival, nor do we know if we'll be receiving a NISMO version.
The 2017 GT-R NISMO was revealed at the Nurburgring last weekend featuring similar updates to the "basic" GT-R, but scoring full carbon fibre front bumper, Alcantara interior and leather Recaro carbon bucket seats with red Alcantara inserts.
There are chassis tweaks too, but power from the boosted V6 remains at 441kW, which is probably enough really.
