BASKETBALL: The Breakers have received a major boost ahead of Friday night's NBL clash against the Sydney Kings with star guard Kirk Penney back to full fitness.

Penney has returned to training after a stomach virus reduced him to playing a bit part in Sunday's season opener against the Cairns Taipans.

The New Zealand outfit landed just 41% of field goals in the 82-71 loss in Auckland, with Penney contributing a disappointing seven points from 26 minutes on court.

Coach Paul Henare expects Penney to be more prominent when the Breakers host the Kings, who will be keen to bounce back from their first-round loss to Adelaide.

Henare has already spoken this week with Penney about production from the bench.

"That was a strength of ours in the pre-season and for whatever reason, we didn't get enough from the bench against Cairns,” Henare said.

"But we know the quality we have in the likes of Kirk, Rob Loe, Shea Ili and the entire bench unit.

"This is a roster with plenty of depth and talent in all positions, I have no doubt they will bring it against the Kings.”

The Kings have won just twice in 14 visits to Auckland but have a star-studded line-up which includes former league MVP Kevin Lisch, star Boomers Jason Cadee and Brad Newley, and seasoned veterans Todd Blanchfield and Tom Garlepp.
