The NRL week that was: Round 2
PLAY OF THE ROUND: Greg Inglis (Souths) - GI fielded a Mitchell Pearce chip kick one metre from his own dead ball line, with the Roosters pressing for a repeat set. Instead, the speed and strength of Inglis left four Chooks defenders floundering before flying bunny Alex Johnston raced 80m to score a try at the other end.
BIGGEST BLUNDER: NRL Referees - We get sick of all the referrals upstairs, but how the referees didn't send a possible try to Storm winger Young Tonumaipea up defied belief. Replays showed it was a fair try, but instead, Manly surged up field and scored for a 12-6 lead - a crucial 12 point turnaround.
BEST COMEBACK: (Manly) - Smashed 42-12 by Parramatta in round one when its forwards were bagged, and questions asked about losing both Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran next season, Manly turned it around against Melbourne to get the critics off its back ... for now.
BUTTER FINGERS AWARD: Shaun Kenny-Dowall (Roosters) - Maybe it was a case of the nervous 90s as Kenny-Dowall approaches 100 NRL tries, but he will never live down his fumble in the shadows of half-time which could have changed the result for his team against the Rabbits.
NO HAYNE, OTHERS GAIN: Fullbacks are lining up for Hayne's No.1 Origin jumper, headed by exciting young Panthers prospect Matt Moylan, who is drawing comparisons with a young Darren Lockyer. Throw in Josh Dugan, Brett Morris, and young Tiger James Tedesco and suddenly it's a tough call for coach Laurie Daley.
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: Danny Wicks (Parramatta) - Wow, welcome back Danny Wicks. In his first NRL game since serving prison time and a four-year drugs ban, he ripped into the giant Bulldogs pack with 159m, 13 hit-ups and 21 tackles - and that was off the bench.
ORIGIN CERTAINTY: Beau Scott (Newcastle) - Will be one of the first players picked for New South Wales, having perfected the late rib-rattler which he showed off to everyone against an unsuspecting Johnathan Thurston in Townsville.
