The Rubens top Hottest 100 with Hoops

AUSSIE rock band The Rubens has topped today's Hottest 100 music poll.

The five-piece's song Hoops was the most popular track in the countdown based on more than 2.094 million votes.

The band told Triple J breakfast hosts Matt Okine and Alex Dyson they only had hopes of topping their previous entry My Gun's finish at number 10.

"Dropping in July 2015, the song's four to the floor beat and sing along lyrics make it a total earworm for Triple J listeners," said Triple J's Content Director Ollie Wards.

"Despite it being a slower song for the band, Hoops always gets the crowd moving at their awesome live shows. After just a few listens the song makes you feel like you've been hearing it for years."

It is the third consecutive year an Australian act has taken out the top spot.

Bookies' favourite King Kunta by Kendrick Lamar came in at number two with Major Lazer's online record-breaking dance track Lean On finishing second runner up.

Recent ARIA Award winners Tame Impala had two entries in the top five songs and four songs in the poll in total.

Indie songstress Courtney Barnett tied Tame Impala for the most songs in today's poll.

On Sunday Triple J will broadcast the songs that missed cut in a Hottest 101 to 200 countdown.
