Freak truck crash mayhem

UPDATE: It was only through pure luck that a bad accident on the Cunningham Highway didn't turn into a tragic one yesterday afternoon.

As mid-afternoon peak-hour traffic built up, a large truck somehow malfunctioned, tilting the tipper up as it travelled along the Blackstone section of the highway, about 2.20pm.

The tipper smashed into a large electronic message board, dislodging the bucket and knocking the sign over.

The driver then lost control of the truck, which travelled about 100m further up the highway before crossing the median strip and entering the other side of the highway.

Fortunately, there were no oncoming vehicles in the path of the truck, which then crashed into bushes off the side of the Warwick-bound lanes.

The bucket came to rest on the left lane on the Brisbane-bound side, causing significant delays for motorists.

The driver was taken to the PA Hospital with non-life-threatening stomach and back injuries.

UPDATE 5PM: Police have reopened the Brisbane-bound lanes of the Cunningham Highway, following an earlier accident involving a tipper truck.

The truck's tipper malfunctioned and popped up, striking an electronic road sign, about 2.20pm.

The tipper was dislodged and fell onto the Brisbane-bound lanes, with the truck continuing for 100m before crossing onto the wrong side of the highway and crashing into bushes.

It was very fortunate that there were no cars coming in the opposite direction as the truck crossed onto the wrong side.

The driver has been treated for stomach and back injuries and taken to the PA Hospital in a stable condition.

EARLIER: POLICE have closed the Brisbane-bound lanes of the Cunningham Highway at Blackstone following a truck crash.

The truck scattered debris across the highway when it left the road and crashed into scrub on the side of the road.

More to come.
