Pair face court for $134k rampage

A KINGAROY man and an Ellesmere man are due to appear in court today after they allegedly stole almost $100,000 in cigarettes from towns across Queensland.

David Swan, 36, and Phillip Carr, 37, appeared briefly in Kingaroy Magistrates Court by videolink from Murgon Magistrates Court on Thursday after being arrested on Wednesday. No charges were heard and no applications for bail were made.

Police will allege Swan and Carr carried out a string of break and enters over a two-year period, including a vast quantity of cigarettes, stealing a total of more than $134,000.

It will also be alleged the pair were selling the cigarettes and kept the cash for themselves. The alleged break and enters include five businesses in Miriam Vale in December, 10 in Moura in April and three in Theodore in March.

Other places police will allege Swan and Carr targeted include Monto, Imbil, Wowan, Toogoolawah, Texas, Crows Nest, Inglewood, Surat and Tara.

At a press conference held on Thursday, Gladstone CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Peachey said the two-year investigation had been led by the Biloela Criminal Investigation Branch and helped by members of the public.

"People in rural communities have become a lot more vigilant," he said.
