"We're devastated" - resident roo shot and killed at hospital

HE would often be found perched up on the green grass shading himself, or visiting patients at their windows.

A much-loved resident kangaroo was shot and killed 50m from the Blackwater Hospital last night, and the news has devastated staff, patients and locals who had become fond of the "old fella" over the years.

Found by a resident at about 9.30am this morning in a hole, he said the news saddened many.

"We're devastated," the resident said.

"He was well-known to many, and had been at the hospital for years.

"He would come close and eat the grass, or visit patients.

"We all knew him, he had a few battle scars and a tear to his ear, but he would just rest at the hospital."

The resident said the "senseless" act is also extremely dangerous.

"To have a gun near the hospital, and in town, it's a concern," he said.

The incident has been reported to the Blackwater police, and if anyone witnessed any suspicious activity last night near the grounds, they are urged to contact the station.
